Tickets are now on sale for one of Cuba’s most celebrated music and dance groups, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, for performances April 30 at 8:00 p.m. and May 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hunter Center at MASS MoCA, 1040 MASS MoCa Way, North Adams, Massachusetts.
Blending African roots with Latin American influences, the ensemble features 16 drummers, vocalists, and dancers from three generations of one family who interpret the Guaguanco, a variant of the most famous form of rumba usually danced by a couple. The group was formed in 1952 in Matanzas, Cuba, as a neighborhood ensemble of musicians and percussionists, integrating dancers in 1965. Today the ensemble is recognized throughout the world as a vital force in the preservation and dissemination of Cuban culture’s African roots. This program marks the first U.S. appearance of Los Muñequitos in nearly 10 years.
The show is co-presented by MASS MoCA and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Center. Tickets are $29 orchestra, $25 mezzanine, and $10 for students and children, and are available at the MASS MoCA box office, by phone at 413.662.2111, or online at www.massmoca.org.
