Stars, Studio Owners, and Others Speak in Favor of Dance in New Video Campaign

“It’s always someone’s first time at the ballet.” Thus American Ballet Theatre and Bolshoi Ballet star David Hallberg announces why he’s “a New Yorker for dance” in a new video campaign by Dance/NYC, a support organization for professional dance.

By moving the dance community and those who care about the future of the art form to offer personal video messages (“I am a New Yorker for dance because…”), Dance/NYC hopes to strengthen the collective voice for dance, draw attention and resources to dance artists and companies, and lift the field as whole.

The half-minute videos feature dance and cultural luminaries from all corners of the city: NYCB dancer Sara Mearns, artistic directors Robert Battle (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), Virginia Johnson (Dance Theatre of Harlem), and Eduardo Vilaro (Ballet Hispanico); dance studio owner Luanne Sorrentino; dancemaker Elizabeth Streb; and designer Isaac Mizrahi. Their statements celebrate the city’s role as a dance capital and highlight the importance of dance to education, neighborhoods, and the economy.
