Ana Marie Forsythe, an internationally recognized master teacher and documenter of the Lester Horton technique, will be awarded the American Dance Festival’s 2012 Balasaraswati/Joy Ann Dewey Beinecke Endowed Chair for Distinguished Teaching, which honors educators who have made extraordinary contributions to the field of dance.

A special ceremony will be held June 16 at 5pm in White Lecture Hall on Duke University’s West Campus, Durham, North Carolina.

With a career spanning more than five decades in over a dozen countries, including Japan, Israel, Argentina, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany, Forsythe is celebrated for her passion and dedication to preserving the modern dance heritage while forging new paths. She began teaching the Horton technique in the 1960s and has devoted more than 20 years to documenting this modern dance form, including co-authoring the book The Dance Technique of Lester Horton and serving as artistic director of three Horton videos.

Forsythe has taught at The Ailey School since 1973 and has served as the chair of the Horton department since 1979. She worked to initiate the Ailey/Fordham Bachelor of Fine Arts Program and conducts pedagogy workshops each summer for professionals who teach

Horton technique. She has also been on the faculty of Vassar College, The Boston

Conservatory, The New School, and the State University of New York at Albany.
