Choreographer Sue Samuels Seeks Strong Dancers for Jazz Roots Company
The Jazz Roots Dance Company, dedicated to the preservation of classical jazz dance forms, will hold an audition October 23 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Ailey Studios, 405 West 55th Street at Ninth Avenue, New York City.
The company is looking for dancers ages 18 to 26 with strong training in ballet and jazz. Musical theater training is helpful. All hopefuls should bring a picture and resume and take the Broadway jazz class taught by the company’s founder, choreographer Sue Samuels. Company rehearsals will be held Saturdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Jazz Roots Dance Company aims to entertain and educate the younger generation about the roots of jazz dance. Samuels’ students have included Melba Moore, Brooke Shields, Irene Cara, and other stage and film stars. Her performance and choreographic credits include lead dancer and assistant choreographer in Got Tu Go Disco at the Minskoff Theater on Broadway, The Johnny Hallyday Show in Paris, and The Brazil Export Show in Rio de Janeiro, as well as TV commercials, telethons, and industrials.
