Darrah Carr on the Go

Share

DSL Dance WireIt’s a busy time for Darrah Carr, a New York-based choreographer who blends traditional Irish step and contemporary modern dance—she calls her style “ModERIN.”

On February 27 she’ll be in some pretty high-powered company—Carmen de Lavallade, Martine Van Hamel, Grover Dale, and Deborah Jowitt, for starters—when From the Horse’s Mouth, a session of performance and reminiscing by prominent dance people of all ages and traditions, pays tribute to New York’s fabled 92nd Street Y to mark its 75th year as a home for dance.

Then her company, Darrah Carr Dance, will tour with the Andy Cooney Band; the Irish-American singer is playing mostly East Coast dates in March. Carr’s troupe will join the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall on March 12 for a St. Patrick’s Day show that also features Méav and Ronan Tynan, Liz Knowles,
Kieran O’Hare, the Uilleann Pipes, and the New York Police Department’s Pipes and Drums of the Emerald Society.

Carr was honored at the end of February by The Irish Echo as one of its “Top 40 Under 40,” a celebration of the younger generation of Irish-Americans. She’s also a frequent contributor to Dance Studio Life. Its March-April issue includes Carr’s profile of 11-year-old tap prodigy Dario Natarelli and her interview with Finis Jhung about his coaching work with three boys who’ll share the lead role in the musical Billy Elliot in Chicago.
