Yvette Thompson, a teacher at Rio Grand Valley Arts Studio in Harlingen, Texas, since 2003, is combining her passions for musical theater and Shakespeare with a student musical version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The script has been edited for children, and the music will be Gershwin’s, including “Embraceable You,” “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” Rehearsals start July 12, and the work will be presented August 7 in the studio’s warehouse space.
Most of the participants are students at the studio, which offers martial arts and music lessons as well as ballet, hip-hop, belly dance, jazz, salsa, tap, musical theater, and ballroom. (Visit www.rgvas.com to learn more.)
“There are 10 children on board so far, ranging in age from 6 to 17,” said Thompson, who’ll be staging the work with T.J. Faver, a voice teacher at the studio. “Most are new singers, a few are new dancers,” so she’ll keep the choreography simple, she told Dance Studio Life.
General-admission tickets will be $7, with children 10 and younger admitted free. Tickets will be available at the door and by calling the studio at 956.412.1314.
