What’s up in the dance community
“Saying you want to be a dance major is just the first step,” Diane Jacobowitz, executive/artistic director of the Brooklyn-based nonprofit dance education program Dancewave, told DSL. “Other young dancers might be sitting on the fence, considering whether or not to major in dance. Knowledge better equips you to make a decision moving forward.”
Dancewave’s Dancing Through College & Beyond is a multidimensional college fair at which high school dancers can meet faculty members or chairs from as many as 50 higher-ed dance departments, participate in a scholarship audition, watch performances from college dance programs, and listen in on panel discussions led by educators, alumni, and dance industry professionals.
DTCB is set for October 7 and 8 at the 92Y Harkness Dance Center, New York City. A unique feature is the fair’s onsite audition, where high school seniors can fulfill the live audition aspect of their application before representatives from numerous colleges. (Last year, some of the 35 college reps in attendance offered more than $1 million in scholarships to some of the 70 auditioning dancers.) There is a $10 fee to audition, but otherwise DTCB is free.
